Príncipe Real, Bairro Alto and Chiado are considered the most trendy and cosmopolitan neighbourhoods in Lisbon.
Príncipe Real, until the 19th century was still occupied by farm and the only thing that existed was the city’s botanic garden. With the ascent of the bourgeoisie this part of the city, a geographically favoured by height and by its proximity to the city centre, was chosen for the construction of numerous mansions. In the second half of the 20th century this neighbourhood would become home to artists, journalists and politicians of the city, as well by the gay community.
Bairro Alto is the first “modern” neighbourhood in Lisbon. Built in the 16th century, outside the city walls, that would later become in the 19th century the place chosen by the national newspapers for their offices and for the city’s first night clubs and continues to be known for its night life.
Chiado, rebuilt after the earthquake in 1755 has become one of the most exclusive areas of Lisbon. The opera house and the aristocratic residences were built in this area as well as the book stores and cafes. In the 19th century the department stores as Grandes Armazéns do Chiado also choose this place for their business.
