In 1755 took place the biggest earthquake in European history hit one of its most flourishing cities: Lisbon. Voltaire immortalized it in his famous play “Candide” and in his “Poème sur le désastre de Lisbonne”. Lisbon would never be the same again.
The Marquis of Pombal, head of the government, and his architects, in a great effort that involved the whole society, wanted to restore the glory of the capital of the Portuguese Empire making it one of the most modern cities of its time.
Join us on the 3-hour tour to Baixa, where you’ll get to see Praça do Comércio, climb the Triumphal Arch in Rua Augusta, see Rossio square, and find out about the Roman’s occupation and the medieval times, and explore the traditional neighbourhood of Mouraria.
